Adams Run, SC - The proposed landfill would be built next to the historic King Cemetery off Highway 17 in Adams Run. Critics say it would destroy the cemetery and possibly contaminate the groundwater.

It started as a chance for the public to weigh in on the landfill project. The developer, Tre Sheppard, offered the community an update on the plans. But the pleasantries didn't last long.

“How is this going to benefit the community,” shouted one man.

“Prove to us it's not going to contaminate the water, we want proof, we want to know we are going to be safe,” said Adams Run resident Ricky Miller.

At issue here is possible contamination. Those who live in the area get their drinking and bathing water from wells. Developers say the landfill would be outfitted with groundwater monitors. Tonight, DHEC tried to explain the safety measures but neighbor Miller says their answers aren't enough.

“No guarantees what so ever, and there is a great concern to the community, we live here, we drink the water,” said Miller

The developer again promises the landfill won't jeopardize their health.

"There is more contamination coming off cars on Highway 17, than there is coming out of here," said Sheppard.

But the debate reaches its peak and DHEC walks out after explaining how long it would take to let the community know about a potential problem.

I spoke to the DHEC employees in the parking lot as they left. They said they were invited here to provide information to the community. They said during the question and answer session, when it became heated and argumentative they decided it was time to leave.

The developer, Tre Sheppard, would not speak with us on camera after the meeting ended.
