SC Monks To End Egg Farm After Animal-Rights Group Criticism

(AP) - The head of a monastery that was criticized by an animal-rights group for its treatment of hens says the monks will phase out their egg production business during the next 18 months.
Father Stan Gumula of Mepkin Abbey said in a statement late Wednesday that the pressure from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has made it difficult for the monks to live a quiet life of prayer and work.
The abbot says the monks will be looking for a new industry to help meet daily expenses.
PETA began its criticism of Mepkin Abbey in February, claiming monks there crammed thousands of hens into small cages and cut off their beaks and killed off males.
The organization claims to have undercover video of conditions at the abbey.
