North Charleston -
It's empty now but soon the inside of an 82,000 square foot building will be spinning.
It'll be the world's first testing grounds for the drive trains of large off-shore wind turbines. South Carolina beat out several other states for the $100 million project, one that will likely help guide the future of energy use in the US and create 20,000 jobs through what some call the BMW affect.
“Just like when BMW came to South Carolina many suppliers lined the corridors of I-85 and well the same thing will happen with larger turbine manufacturers," said Clemson Vice President John Kelly.
It is a dream come true for Senator Glenn McConnell. He says through the research and the spin-off jobs it'll create the research building will become one of the most important economic sites in the state.
"Whatever happens to the national economy we should be somewhat immune to it," he said.
