Charleston, SC - Charleston city officials will be taking furlough days to save the city $1.1 million.
According to officials, Mayor Joe Riley
(web | news | bio) will take nine furlough days in 2010. Non-sworn employees will have five furlough days and seven days for department heads.
City officials decided on furloughs and a franchise fee to make up for the city budge shortfall. Officials say that they had a choice between either furloughs or a property tax increase.
This is all due to a decrease in the city's revenue stream that includes a decrease in building permits which are down 75 percent from 2007.
