Johns Island -
More than 1400 acres and 1100 homes, a golf course, hotel, retail shopping and more. The Kiawah River Plantation is set to carve out its own portion of rural Johns Island.
"Our market study shows this would be second homes and retirement, potentially 10 - 20 percent primary housing," said Kevin O’Neill with The Beach Company.
The 20 year project will be developed by the Beach Company and would create up to 900 jobs in that time and generate millions for the local economy. But despite the positives, those who live on the island have concerns.
"People are coming in from different states to Kiawah and Seabrook Island and changing everything here," said Jessica Kidd who is a life long Johns Islander.
"I think they should keep Johns Island rural. This is one of the only places in Charleston anymore, Johns Island, Wadmalaw, Ravenel that's it," she said.
The developers say they're working with the community by holding public hearings.
