West Ashley, SC - Eight families are forced out of their homes after an apartment fire in West Ashley over the weekend.
It happened Sunday morning on Cedarhurst Drive in West Ashley. Tenant Kevin Rust came home Sunday to find an apartment in his building had caught on fire.
“We saw the disturbance, people out front and they said we were not allowed to go back into the apartment because there was no electricity,” said Rust.
The Red Cross reached out to Rust and told him to go to a nearby hotel.
“We did some paperwork and in 10 or 15 minutes they set us up for the evening,” said Rust. Rust was one of 31 fire victims the Red Cross helped this weekend alone.
“It is a substantial number to have in any one weekend,” said Gordon Robertson, Regional Development Officer, American Red Cross.
The number of people needing assistance after fires is up 17 percent from a year ago. The Red Cross says the economy is a major factor.
“I think that what you’re seeing is people who are at a complete loss and they don’t know where to turn next,” said Robertson.
The Red Cross is now actively fundraising to try to come up with the extra money needed to help the additional families.
