Walterboro, SC - Law enforcement is keeping a close eye on the small town of Walterboro. After a week of violence, the Walterboro community is finding some relief tonight as investigators continue to step up patrols. Colleton County Sheriff George Malone says the patrols will continue until the criminals behind this senseless violence are off the street.
A tragic reminder of the gunfire that plagued the streets of Walterboro. At a home, three people shot and killed last Monday, including a 20-month-old girl.
“I just don’t know why they had to come through here and do that shooting like that, don’t know why they killed my little baby,” said Bessie Kittrell, relative of the victim’s.
On Wednesday, another shooting sent two people to the hospital. Family and friends of the victims say the weekend carried some very tense moments, scared the violence may breakout again. But the constant sight of police on the streets provide some relief.
“They were everywhere, every second on the second, they were on the road, coming out of the dirt, they were everywhere around here,” said Donnell Daniels.
Sheriff Malone says the rash of shootings is a first in his lifetime and the community is on the edge.
“They are very uncomfortable right now and everyone is looking for answers with all of us working together maybe we can come up with something,” said Malone.
Answers that can’t come soon enough, for the people suffering in wake of this tragedy. Malone did not give specifics but he says the investigation is moving along.
