Walterboro, SC - Local leaders speak out after a week of deadly violence on the streets of Walterboro. City and state officials even the governor showed up to hold a press conference Friday in hopes of easing fears after two shootings leave three dead and eight wounded.
More officers from several agencies can be seen driving up and down the streets. Local officials say despite what has happened they believe the city is safe.
Mayor Bill Young delivers strong words to the City of Walterboro,"We will not surrender to gangs or drug violence or to those that would have us live in fear."
The situation is so dire and deadly that even Gov. Mark Sanford joined the mayor after calls were made to him to declare a state of emergency in the small city of 6000.
"From the chief's standpoint and the mayor's standpoint, theyve been very able in handling the tragedy on Monday and Wednesday," said Gov. Sanford.
Those shootings leaving a total of eight injured and three dead including 20-month-old Shaniya Burden. Following the crimes additional police units from ATF to SLED have saturated Walterboro.
"We obviously had a strong presences down here and will do that until this case is solved," Reggie Lloyd of SLED says.
Officials say declaring a state of emergency or enacting a curfew to stop the violence is not needed at this time.
"We feel we have enough of a physical presences down here to handle any problem that might occur," Lloyd says.
One arrest has been made in Mondays drive-by shooting. Danziel Chapman was charged with murder. Authorities say more arrests could be forth coming. Still some residents remain fearful.
"Of course you never can be too sure, so I'm trying to stay as safe as I can," Shadarus Dent said.
Police and the community are hoping the violence comes to an end so they can feel safe in their city once again.
Authorities did say that the responsibility in preventing future crimes lies in the community to talk to police rather than to take matters in their own hands. Law enforcement officials say the additional police presence will remain in Walterboro through the weekend then they will re-evaluate their needs.
