Hilton Head Island, SC - The public defender who oversees representation for the poor in five South Carolina counties has been charged with driving under the influence.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports 65-year-old Gene Hood of Beaufort was arrested Tuesday night. Sheriff's records show he was charged with DUI and transporting alcohol in a vehicle and has been released.
Hood is a former Beaufort County public defender. He was appointed to his current position last year by the state Commission on Indigent Defense. He oversees public defenders in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Colleton and Allendale counties.
Hood did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
