Ladson, SC - Lowcountry officials pave the way for the next 25 years of transportation in the lowcountry. Monday night the Tri-county's council of governments asked for input in the Ladson area on how best to get around the three counties in hopes of making major improvements.
Neighbors discussed issues from bicycle lanes to a much larger transportation plan.
“Commuter rail is the way to go to handle moving a lot of people over a period of time,” Goose Creek resident James Helms said.
The tri-county planning agency is working on a roadmap for the next 25 years.
“Were looking to preserve what works, upgrade what doesn’t and plan for the future,” BCDC
(web | news) G Senior Planner, Jeffrey Burns said.
The lowcountry's population will keep growing and moving those extra people around will need to keep pace. Even Boeing changes the big picture.
“Boeing is a major employer. There are going to be a number of jobs associated with the facility and secondary jobs. All these folks are going to live in this community and we have to look at how best to provide travel options for our new residents and existing residents,” Burns said.
Whether its water ferries, wider roads, or a rail system, the lowcountry is gearing up for the future of transportation.
The council of government hopes to have a plan by early next year. Public input is vital to the planning process. The next meeting is tomorrow in Summerville from 6-8 p.m. at Summerville High School at 1101 Boone Hill Road. Thursday’s meeting will be in North Charleston from 6-8 p.m. at Fort Dorchester High School at 8500 Patriot Blvd.
