North Charleston -
The numbers are staggering: 2 separate mass shootings have left 14 people dead and 35 injured. It was all the work of two gunmen in less than 24 hours. Sheriff Al Cannon says tragedies like the ones in Fort Hood and Orlando could happen anywhere.
"In our community there's nothing magical that makes us immune to this," he said.
And that's why officers must be ready to act at a moments notice. Experts say typically rampage shootings are brief and often deadly.
"Literally decisions have to be made at the snap of a finger and the potential for mistakes increases," Sheriff Cannon said. "The idea of setting up a traditional perimeter is not acceptable anymore,” he added.
Sheriff Cannon says in some instances those closest to the situation may need to act.
"The natural inclination is for people to duck and take cover and quite frankly in some scenarios someone has to go to the shooter and stop him,” he said.
