North Charleston, SC -
Third graders at Burns Elementary had some special visitors Friday. Charlie T. Riverdog and members of the Riverdogs baseball team came out and read to the kids as part of the reading and running with the Riverdogs program. That program helps promote exercise and reading outside of the classroom.
Children earn points for keeping track of what they do at home in an effort to win prizes.
“I think that any time you put kids into a competitive sense, they are going to try and read more. We have found out that the kids are reading much more with their parents after school,” David Spurlock, the health and physical fitness coordinator for the Charleston County School District, said.
Nine other schools in the area are taking part in the program.
