North Charleston -
Growing fears over what could be the new home for some detainees from Guantanamo Bay.
The naval brig in Hanahan has been considered by military officials in the past but a new unconfirmed report says trials for some of the 200 plus detainees from Cuba could be held there.
And that's drawing mixed reaction from people living nearby.
"The Charleston naval weapons station is already a strike point that's going to make it even worse and even more dangerous," said Theresa Simms.
"We have dangerous people in our midst already so having detainees from GITMO I would not feel less safe," Eric Salam.
For nearly six years al-Qaeda sleeper agent Ali-Almarri was housed in the brig.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison after he was tried in Illinois. But US Senator Jim DeMint says the naval brig is not ready to handle others and says that's why gitmo was built in the first place.
"The brig in Charleston is a minimum security prison...this is not a good time to be taking risks. Chas has a lot going for it now with the Boeing deal we don't need any thing to put a chill on job creation, economic development and quality of life,” he said.
