Charleston, SC -
Looking for a way to alleviate traffic during your commute?
How about hitting the water instead of the highway?
The Water Taxi is in talks to build a floating dock along the existing pier at Waterfront Park downtown. They hope this location would bring more people on board, particularly commuters.
“It makes you feel good coming and going to work. If you could start the day seeing dolphins, turtles jumping rays and everything. The tourists you see start your days off right too,” said Dan Connell.
Dan Connell took the water taxi to and from work for three years, but he was the only regular commuter on board. Now the water taxi is hoping to change that.
It is currently located at the Maritime Center near the aquarium, but after several businesses closed there the company started to rethink where it could take people.
“Everybody flocks to the market and that would just be a better market for us,” said Scott Conneley, Co-Owner, Water Taxi.
The City agrees. Mayor Joe riley says the city is looking into helping pay for the roughly $150,000 it would cost to build the dock at Waterfront Park.
“We think its beneficial to our community, supports tourism and provides an alternate means of transportation,” said Mayor Riley.
Water taxi owners also say if they could dock at the park they would adjust their hours to make it more convenient for commuters.
Water taxi owners say their goal is to get the new stop added in the next year.
The new passenger terminal is also another possible location for the Water Taxi stop.
