Charleston, SC - Ten candidates battled it out for half of the Charleston City Council seats. The four districts up for election cover most of West Ashley, parts of Downtown, and James Island.
A seat remains empty on city council as Dean Riegel and Ginger Rosenberg will go on to a run off election.
“The new campaign starts tomorrow morning. We are working tomorrow working hard,” Riegel said, surrounded by supporters at his West Ashley home Tuesday night. “I think what we need on council is new energy, new enthusiasm and new leadership. I don’t think we’ve had that over ht years on Charleston city council and its time for that to occur.”
Rosenberg put up a fight and will campaign another two weeks in a race she had a feeling would come.
“I went into this knowing there was a good chance at there being a run-off. Whenever you have three people running for the same race, the chances are high for a run-off,” Rosenberg said.
Rosenberg says she’s looking forward to tackling the big issues.
“The big issues out here in district 10 are traffic and trash. We have to find ways to make traffic move faster and we have to deal with the trash issue in West Ashley,” Rosenberg said.
In another tight race, Charleston City Council member Yvonne Evans lost her seat after 20 years on council to Mike Seekings in District 8, 52 to 48 percent.
“I feel humbled after having a long race and Yvonne Evans has been a great council woman in Charleston for a long time and I think what happened today was the people said every now and then a new voice is something,” Seekings said.
Blake Hallman won the District 2 seat with 53 percent of the vote. He celebrated his win with his mother, wife and two twin daughters. Hallman says he’s ready to bring his business expertise to council’s table.
“It makes we want to focus right off the bat on what I’ve accomplished on city council, fiscal responsibility,” Hallman said.
James Island’s District 12 Incumbent Kathleen Wilson will keep her seat, winning with 61 percent of the vote.
