Awendaw, SC -
There is a new mayor in Awendaw as the challenger Samuel Robinson unseats long time mayor William Alston.
It was a close race that divided the tiny town of Awendaw, but now the town seems to be headed in a new direction.
The two mayoral candidates stood in a tense room in Awendaw waiting to see the numbers.
Former Mayor William Alston was the only mayor the town has ever known; he has been in office for 17 years.
After a tough wait, Samuel Robinson was named the winner.
“It is a victory for change, and transparency and open government,” he said. “It is a victory for a new style of leadership.”
Robinson has served on town council since 2007 and he knows the big problems the small community is facing. The first issue, he says, is a lack of clean drinking water.
“The situation is and has been that for seven years and $5 million this administration still can’t deliver one drop of water to one household. I’m going to correct that,” Robinson said.
The other issue is the possibility of massive growth.
“Of course there must be some growth, but that growth must be in harmony will the town of Awendaw,” he added. “The people understand that I am committed, that I am dedicated and that I am equipped to handle this position.”
Mr. Alston refused to speak about the election results and he has conceded the race to Samuel Robinson.
Samuel Robinson received 349 votes to Alston’s 328.
