Charleston, SC - This week is earthquake awareness week in South Carolina. Here's what you need to know to be earthquake safe:
- hang onto your hurricane supply kit after the season is finished, those same supplies can be used after an earthquake
- have enough water (5 gal/person) and food to last at least 72 hours, a first aid kit and medical supplies
- pack a flashlight, batteries, a radio, fire extinguisher
- know safe spots in each room
- if in your home, go to safe spots: under archways, under sturdy furniture, against inside walls or a corner
- if in your car, pull to side of road and stop until earthquake stops, avoid overpasses and bridges
- if outside, get into open away from buildings, trees and powerlines
- do not use electrical switches or appliances if gas leaks are suspected
