Awendaw, SC -
Small town politics is heating up in Awendaw as the town’s mayor is challenged at the polls for the first time in seventeen years.
Voters will choose between Mayor William Alston and current town councilmember Samuel Robinson.
Mayor Alston is the only mayor the tiny town of Awendaw has ever known; he has been in office since 1992. As the time passed, the town has gotten bigger and that growth is Awendaw’s number one issue.
“My position on growth is we have to have some growth,” Alston said. “I’m talking about smart growth.”
Alston’s administration has annexed several tracts of land including the Jefferson tract, the Nebo tract, the King tract and the White tract. Those pieces of land could potentially hold more than 2,000 homes. Some of the town’s residents oppose that amount of growth, but Alston says expansion is needed.
“If we don’t have it, we are going to die as a town,” said Alston.
Alston says with more development comes a larger tax base and more opportunity.
“Folks here don’t want their children to leave here and don’t return because there is nothing for them to return to,” he added.
The future of this small community is now resting in the voters’ hands.
