Ladson, SC - The Coastal Carolina Fair is winding down and despite the rough economy attendance approaching record numbers. At the same time there is some concern about the fair's future.
Another night at the fair comes to a close and year after year, the number of people walking through the gate remains strong. 145,000 people through Thursday, that's two thousand more than last year.
“There has been a lot of doom and gloom with the economy, its not happening at the fairgrounds,” said Joe Bolchoz of the Coastal Carolina Fair.
One reason for the success, the fair comes but once a year. Here, families have plenty to choose from, without breaking the bank.
“Children make the fair fun, they make you laugh and for family’s it’s good to be together like that,” said Elaine Cowee.
Recently, organizers admit there has been some talk of the fairgrounds being sold. The land is owned by the Charleston Exchange Club and members have no intentions of shutting down.
“I assure you, the grounds, the fair will be here for years to come, no way, no how are we going to get rid of the fair. The fair is the goose laying the golden egg,” said Bolchoz.
Over the next few months, organizers plan on taking the pulse of fair-goers. Trying to figure out ways to improve on what many consider a very successful year.
