A stretch of Savannah Highway now has a new name remembering the Charleston 9.
The 3.6 mile stretch in front of what used to be the Sofa Super Store has been named the "Charleston 9 Memorial Highway".
Local officials took the idea to Columbia and a resolution was put together.
On Monday, Mayor Joe Riley (web|news|bio), firefighters and family members of the fallen 9 were on hand for the dedication.
"You have thousands of people who come to this highway every day when you see the Charleston 9 they're gonna always remember what happened, what took place here," said Kim Drayton, widow of fallen firefighter Earl Drayton.
State representative Leon Stavrinakis was the lead sponsor.
He calls it a fitting tribute to the fallen firefighters.
