Isle of Palms, SC -
Two men are squaring off to become the next mayor of the Isle of Palms. Newcomer Jimmy Ward is going up against incumbent Dick Cronin.
Ward and Cronin are two very different men with their own focus.
“I’m concerned about the budget and financial accountability,” said Ward.
“The last couple of years, the city has been struggling with livability issues,” Cronin said.
The candidates also disagree on the new public safety building on the island. Jimmy Ward says the building has put a strain on the Isle of Palms’ finances, but Mayor Cronin simply says it was desperately needed.
“My opponent believes we incurred too much financial obligation, but I and the City Council don’t believe that,” Cronin said. “We had to take care of these things for the citizens to build a safe environment.”
“They needed a new fire station and they needed a new police station, but they didn’t need anything that extravagant. It is a joke,” said Ward.
Ward says the city is swirling in debt and that is a pattern he hopes to change.
“We’re headed for financial disaster if we keep spending like we’re doing. People are hurting and they are losing their homes. The city keeps spending like they are immune to these volatile economic conditions,” Ward added.
“We’ve been able to manage our budget, trim it down and make sure we stay within our financial restraints,” Cronin said.
Election day is next Tuesday, November 3rd.
