Charleston, SC -
A planet in peril, some experts say global warming could change the face of Charleston as we know it.
"There has been mounting evidence that climate change is not the future it is now," said Deb Callahan, President of The Heinz Center.
Evidence like the rise in global economic losses from natural disasters from 50 billion in the 1950's to nearly $800 billion in the 90s, due in part to increasing storm activity.
"We are seeing today increased intensity hurricanes," Callahan said.
"Individuals have a role to A reduce their emissions that cause climate change and B adapt our life with what's happening in respect to climate change," she said.
Steps like strengthening coastal eco-systems to fight storm surge and fortifying homes to withstand future damage.
"We really need to think about how the city is built and how the city is ready to weather those increasing impacts," she said.
