Columbia, SC - Extended jobless benefits are coming to an end for about 7,000 out-of-work South Carolinians.
Employment Security Commission officials said Wednesday that an extra 13 weeks of unemployment benefits end Saturday for 6,900 unemployed residents. Those extra benefits had kicked in after 59 weeks of benefits from other programs were already exhausted.
The commission says a state can't continue to collect extended benefits when its unemployment rate falls below a certain number. That's now the case in South Carolina, where unemployment was 11.5 percent in August.
The state's September jobless rate will be released Oct. 21. South Carolina will be re-evaluated later to see if extended benefits might be available again.
