Awendaw, SC - The town of Awendaw is giving the green light for a plan to develop part of the area.

Council approved the plan on a four to one vote.

Thursday night Awendaw council approved a plan to turn the Nebo Tract into a neighborhood with 300 homes.

Many Awendaw residents are afraid this one development could lead to a more commercialized town.

“When I moved to Awendaw 3 years ago, I never thought it would come to this. I moved out here because it’s the country and it’s nice and peaceful,” said April Horn, Awendaw Resident.

The town of Awendaw is divided about whether or not developing the area is a good thing.

“We need a grocery store. We need a small bank. We need something here in Awendaw to bring some kind of impact to the residents in this town,” said Mariam Green, Town Council Member.

“We just need one grocery store. We’ve already got one gas station and one restaurant. We don’t need to be the city,” said Horn.

But whether people want it or not, 300 new homes will go in to the Nebo Tract and the people will cost taxpayers.

“This will cause the tax base of the town to rise dramatically,” Samuel Robinson, Mayor Pro Tem, Awendaw.

Robinson says they are not sure how much taxes will go up but he says the new development is worth the cost.

“I moved from Mount Pleasant to get away from the city and now it seems we’ve got Mount Pleasant moving to us from one side and Myrtle Beach moving to us from the other side,” said Robinson.

There's more expanding on the horizon. Council is discussing plans to develop two other spaces in Awendaw, but there are no concrete plans at this time for what will go there.

There is no word on when they will break ground for the neighborhood.

Council says it could take 10 to 15 years before the development is complete.
