Florence, SC - A former South Carolina mayor who pleaded guilty to misconduct last year has pleaded not guilty to Social Security fraud charges against him.
The Morning News of Florence reported Friday that former Latta mayor Alan Lenneau Berry is charged with theft of federal government funds. He's accused of taking around $129,000 in disability benefits while he was mayor.
Authorities say Berry had his city paychecks issued to his wife so that he could continue receiving disability benefits from the Social Security Administration. His wife, Sheila Berry, has also been charged.
Berry pleaded guilty to state charges of misconduct and obstruction of justice in May 2008. He was ordered to serve probation for misusing town property, funds and resources.
