Charleston, SC -
It’s a hot button issue, America’s energy future, but NASA climatologist Dr. James Hansen says quality is just as important as quantity.
"Electricity production that we've got to find a way to produce so that it doesn't produce CO2, so energy efficiency and renewable should be first on our list," Dr. Hansen said.
He says we can also consider safe nuclear power and carbon capture coal technology. Another piece of the giant energy puzzle lies with our vehicles. SCE&G showed off their plug in hybrid today. Officials say it gets up to 100 miles per gallon and has a less harmful affect on the environment.
"The nice thing with the plug in hybrid when you’re plugged in its being powered by domestically produced power so you don’t have to rely on foreign oil," said Robert Yanity, with SCE&G.
Officials say even small steps; collectively can end up making a big difference.
"The more efficiently energy is used the less power plants we have to build so obviously if we can conserve we can meet the energy crisis of the US," Yanity said.
A crisis that officials say can only be overcome by a change in energy and in people's attitudes.
