A popular school employee was killed Wednesday just south of Summerville on SC-165 in a car accident, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

It happened around 11:45 a.m. The victim, Joe Bunch, was at a stop sign coming out of the Ashley Ridge High School parking lot, when another driver, Michele Bining of Summerville, attempted a right turn from SC-165.  Bining lost control of the 2002 Dodge SUV and slammed into the driver's side of the Bunch's 2002 Jeep SUV.  Bining was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina by Emergency Medical Services.

Bunch served the Dorchester District 2 schools as their courier, delivering mail to and from each school in that district, according to the schools spokesperson, Pat Raynor.  He was a long time employee.  He came to work for the district after retiring from his first profession.

The collision is under investigation.

4 Interact: Dorchester District 2 Courier Killed in Accident
Carolyn Sires
Dorchester School District Two is heartbroken by the loss of Joe Bunch.  Although he loved to tease all of us, children and adults alike, we somehow always knew he would do anything for us.  When our children were little, they knew that could always go to "Mr. Joe" if they needed help.  He probably was probably one of the most genuinely kind people...checking to see if we put stickers on our new car tags, fussing over incomplete mail or cooking up some famous Joe Bunch oysters---he had it all covered.  Rest in peace Mr. Joe---we love you.
