Gamecock's Fever After Big Wins
posted 5:06 pm Tue October 09, 2007 - Charleston
Big wins for
Carolina this year, and only one blemish has vaulted the Gamecocks up the ranks in the national polls. Local retailers are excited about
University of
South Carolina’s success, but at times, they are finding it difficult to keep the shelves stocked.
“Carolina's got a phenomenal football team. We've been waiting for Spurrier to get his team, his recruits and everything going, and now finally we're seeing a good top ten football team,” said Eric Holzer, co-owner of Palmetto Moon, Northwood’s Mall.
To be exact, the Gamecocks are number seven in the Associated Press Poll, they haven't been this highly ranked since 1984 when they climbed as high as number two.

“You would not believe it, the stuff is flying out the door,” said the Charleston Sportsman Shop's Retail Manager, Barbara Tuttle.
“Whether it's tattoos for your face or pom poms for the stands or horns to blow: I mean anything that people can wear to the game, it's been great,” said Holzer.
Lowcountry retailers with Carolina merchandise agree that sales are up, but this weekend brings a new challenge with another Carolina.
“
North Carolina thinks they are the Carolina and
South Carolina claims they are the Carolina so maybe after this weekend, we'll have a final answer,”
The debate may never be settled, so the focus shifts to something most fans consider a pre-game must: tailgating.
“We've blown through these tents, you know people can't get enough of tents, because everybody loves to tailgate,” said Holzer.
“We have a full range of things from seat cushions and rolling coolers,” said Tuttle.
“We've been lucky to keep the merchandise in, so we keep our customers happy, keep a nice store to shop in,” said Holzer.
They certainly are shopping: Hats, shirts, visors, jerseys, and tailgating supplies. If it has Carolina on it, Gamecock fans have to have it, but on catch, we're only at the half way point of the season.
“In terms of business we hope they continue to do well,” said Tuttle.
Tuttle also humorously added, visor sales have been up since Coach Spurrier took over the football program in 2005.
