Moncks Corner, SC - A convicted murderer has been sentenced to life in prison, avoiding a death sentence when a South Carolina judge declared a mistrial in the sentencing phase of his trial.
Media outlets report that Colin Broughton received two life terms and 105 years for the 2006 murder of a woman in the Berkeley County community of Huger.
Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said one of the life terms was on a burglary charge.
Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson declared a mistrial in the sentencing trial Tuesday, citing an attempt to intimidate jail guards who were prepared to testify Broughton was an ideal prisoner.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the alleged incident that the judge said strikes at the heart of the legal system.
