A Summerville mother is now facing charges following the death of her toddler. Jennifer Spoerl is out on bail tonight. She is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. The investigation started last week after Blaise Spoerl, just 22-months-old, was found dead at the family’s home.
The charges are a result of the investigation. The mother is not being held responsible for the child's death, instead for a prior incident.
Jennifer Spoerl stands accused of putting her 22-month-old child at risk. Her charge of unlawful conduct towards a child stems from an incident the day before Blaise Spoerl was killed. Court records say Spoerl and her boyfriend took Blaise to the neighborhood pool, where witnesses say the couple argued and drank alcohol.
Witnesses also say the toddler fell in the pool on several occasions, and had to be rescued by other swimmers.
“There are a lot of things that happen during an investigation, we would be remise in our jobs if we just singled one person out, a lot of the information came from a lot of different witnesses in the area at the time, from the defendant herself and from the co-defendant,” said Summerville Captain Jon Rodgers.
We spoke with Spoerl last week, after her boyfriend, Justin Hillerby was arrested and charged in the toddler's death. She refused to go on camera, but offered this explanation.
"Accidents happen everyday, toddlers fall, I don't know, police won't tell me anything," said Spoerl.
Police contacted Spoerl's family about the charge, and the mother turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday.
We spoke to Jennifer Spoerl by phone this afternoon, she says she has no comment at this time.
Justin Hillerby, the man charged with homicide by child abuse, is being held without bond in Berkeley County.
