After Hurricane Hugo Charleston's Mayor Joe Riley (web|news|bio) doesn't want anyone to take any chances. That's why today he made a plea to those living in Charleston to be on alert.
The mayor wants to make sure people are taking this storm seriously and they prepare for the worst.
Hurricane Hugo taught lessons.
"I haven't met anybody that was part of the community where Hugo hit with everything but full force who stay, that stayed, that said 'I'm glad I stayed.' Everybody said that was the stupidest thing I did, I'm lucky to be alive, that was the worst night," said Riley.
That's why Mayor Riley urges people to listen to recommendations on evacuations if they are made.
"If a hurricane is coming, batten down the hatches at home, secure it, get in the car and go visit a relative for a few days and get out of harm's way," said Riley.
Whether or not Hanna really will come is what Mayor Riley and the rest of the lowcountry are waiting on.
"Tomorrow morning will be an important moment in terms of making decisions about shelters," said Riley.
Mayor riley urges everyone to be prepared with supplies and had a few tips.
If you have a drainage inlet in your neighborhood, he asks you make sure its clear of any debris.
Also, be aware of any neighbors living alone in case they need any help during an evacuation.
