A Charleston police officer was allegedly assaulted by two female high school students.

It took place at James Island Charter High School.  Jasmine Smalls, 17 and a 15-year-old student are charged with assault on a police officer.  The officer says he was pushed by one of the students and then punched in the face by the other after they were told  to move out of the courtyard.  The police report also indicates one student tried to grab his gun.

But the girls' grandmother says it was the girls who were assaulted.

"I couldn't understand what would warrant anybody to beat a child to that extent where she would be swollen and she would be bruised," said Annette Smalls, the teens grandmother.

Smalls says the girls have lacerations on their backs and have swollen arms and legs.  The 17-year-old was held in custody for one day and then released.

4 Interact: Police Officer Says He was Assaulted by Two Female High School Students

The fifteen-year old is a friend of mine. We have played soccer together for about a year, and this story was shocking to me. Jericha is an incredibly sweet person, and her sister is too. The  only possible way she might have done something like this would have been in  means of defending herself  and her sister. Of course rumors are circulating around the High school, and some are saying that the officer was aggressive towards the two and supposedly he reached for his gun, not the girls. Also, the officer has done something like this before, acting violently towards a student. It seems to me that people are misjudging the situation, simply  because it was a law inforcement officer, but what about the girls? what justifies a grown man injuring teenage girls?
