A new ad on child sexual abuse is making some big waves. The ads are by produced the Lowcountry organization Darkness to Light, and they're airing on our channel, CNN and Lifetime.
Darkness to Light is bringing the men on the ads into living rooms around the country and many people aren't happy about it. Libby Turner is an executive associate for Darkness to Light and she's hearing the response first hand.
"I’ve been threatened with class action lawsuits, we've been threatened that they’ll go to the national enquirer and other media outlets and discredit darkness to light and undermine work we are doing," said Darkness to Light’s Executive Associate, Libby Turner.
"They're creepy. They're in your face that's touched a nerve," said Turner.
Its hit a nerve that Turner says should have touched long before they released the ads.
"I’m sorry people are offended. Be offended at the figures. Don’t be offended at us for bringing your attention to it," said Turner. "We've got 15 to 30 seconds to catch everybody's attention and we've done that."
Darkness to Light is trying to bring attention to the numbers. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys they say will be sexually abused before their 18 and 90 percent of child sexual abuse is done by someone the child knows.
"We didn’t intend to single out everybody named Al or every Coach named Sanders," said Turner.
It’s the child sexual abuse that Darkness to Light administrators say people should really be upset about.
Despite whether the publicity is positive or negative, Darkness to Light has seen a 200 percent increase in traffic on its website.
