It's a big part of the business at the Isle of Palms, but smoking could soon be banned at the beach town.
Monday night, city council passed the first reading of a proposed smoking ban. Several people opposed it, saying the ban could hurt businesses.
"Half the people who come up here smoke ciggarettes so it's going to kill the customers business base and hurt business so I don't understand why they need to pass a law, especially since Sullivan's Island, Mount Pleasant and Charleston already has a smoking ban," Jeff Mathis said.
Sullivan's Island, Mount Pleasant and Charleston City Councils have all passed similar bans.
