Authorities say a Spartanburg man is charged with homicide by child abuse after his girlfriend's 10-year-old daughter died.

Police say 31-tear-old Tony Tyre was watching the girl last Sunday and said she had a seizure. But doctors said the bruises on the girl's head and body were caused by abuse.

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office says Meah Weidner died in the hospital two days later. Officials are awaiting toxicology reports before determining a cause of death.

Deputies say the girl also suffered a broken arm a few weeks before she died and Tyre initially said she fell out of bed, but later admitted he hurt her.

A woman who answered the phone at Tyre's home said his attorney told her not to talk. She wouldn't give the lawyer's name.
