North Charleston, SC -
An effort is under way in the South Carolina Lowcountry to get residents to shift some of their spending to local businesses to help the area's economy.
Lowcountry Local First kicks off the effort Friday at the Navy Yard at Noisette in North Charleston.
The nonprofit group urges residents to shift 10 percent of their spending to independent, locally owned businesses.
The group says if the 800,000 households in the Charleston area shifted just 10 percent of their spending to local businesses, thousands of jobs would be created generating millions of dollars of economic activity.
Last month, local governments and about 250 businesses signed the "Declaration of Independents," pledging to support local business.
