Folly Beach, SC -
Today volunteers are combing the sands of Folly Beach to help clean up the edge of America.
About 30 volunteers have been cleaning since 3 p.m. and they’ve picked up about 150 lbs. of trash. They say much of it is left over from the holiday weekend.
“There were so many people here on the 4th of July and to think they didn’t care enough to clean up what they brought is very sad,” said volunteer Marsha Cline.
From beer bottles to tent stakes, volunteers are picking up anything that wasn’t intended by Mother Nature.
“Think about if they came to your neighborhood and left crap in your yard, how you’d feel,” said Cline.
The monthly beach sweep is sponsored by the South Carolina Aquarium.
“Shore birds, crabs things that live on the beach that would eat a small piece of plastic like a straw or bottle cap that’s going to be extremely harmful,” explained Rosanne Runyeon of the S.C. Aquarium.
Volunteers say this effort is a major step in keeping Folly Beach the beautiful destination that it is.
Because of the trash that’s been left on the beach Folly Beach officials are considering ways of reducing litter. One extreme measure would be to ban alcohol on the beach.
