Wednesday night's record rainfall still has people cleaning up.The torrential rains stranded drivers, shut down roads and flooded homes.
At the Riverway condos, the fierce flooding brought raw sewage right into several condos.
Latisha Calhoun and Caleb May,neighbors at the Riverway condos,were cleaning up after they say sewer spilled inside their homes.
Calhoun says,“I noticed water was coming up from the bottom part of the toilet and I noticed it wasn’t rain water because it smelled a little bit.”
On Wednesday night, North Charleston’s city sewage district says the polluted water made it into apartments as a record rainfall of more than four inches overwhelmed the storm drains.People in North Charleston are not alone in the clean up.
Workers from a carpet care center responded to more than 50 calls of flooding around Charleston and Hanahan.
Jeremy Pinto says, “If it doesn’t get dried out right,you can end up with mold and mildew.Certainly the most obvious is your odors and can cause structural damage.”
Even on King Street, Charleston City Fire officials say a drainage pipe blocked by debris led to a leak in the Apple store which is now temporarily closed for clean up.
For people living at Riverside in North Charleston, they plan to hold their breath.
A similar incident happened last October during the heavy rain and sewer district officials tell us they are working on fixing the problem.
Charleston city fire officials say there was no damage to any buildings because of actual flooding.
