Charleston, SC - Thousands around the nation gather to protest the government this Independence Day. This time they are rallying against what they call wasteful government spending.

“It is time to pay attention to us, the people,” Catherine Welborn says. Welborn was one of a countless amount of people who descended on Cannon Park Saturday morning for another Tea Party.

Welborn is part of a rallying cry heard all around the Lowcountry. The Tea Party attracted radio personalities, everyday people and lawmakers.

“There is a sense that something is wrong in this country and there is a renewal,” Senator Larry Grooms began. “There are folks waking up to the fact that we are losing our liberties and freedoms at an ever increasing rate.”

That loss, they say, coming in the form of higher taxes and out of control spending.

“They’re spending more money. The trillion dollars they’re handing out, this is what they have spent in six months,” Welborn added.

Many of the tea party participants are pushing for a grassroots effort to stop what they call the country’s slide into socialism. They say this tea party is just the beginning.

Ann Callander was one of the faces in the crowd. She brought her grandchildren along in an effort to teach them about what was happening in their government.

“I’m not angry, but I’m very concerned,” Callander said. “I’ve woken up and I want to do something and I want to start them young.”

Callander says she came out to the tea party in order to make her voice heard.

“The government is supposed to be subject to those who are governed. We’re the ones being governed, but the government is doing whatever they want to do and I’m asking them to stop,” Callander added.

Organizers say at least 1,300 similar protests ere held across the country.
