Charleston County - His admissions of guilt and subsequent confessions are clearly weighing on the mind of Gov. Mark Sanford.
"Nobody likes to go ahead and have this conversation," the governor said last week.
His absence from office and admitted affairs with Maria Belen Chapur and other women is tearing apart his marriage and political career. His wife Jenny calling her husband's actions quote "inexcusable."
Gov. Sanford has been seeking spiritual guidance from close advisors to rebuild his marriage and reputation. He recently said he's been in a struggle between his heart and his value system.
"He's got to get at the heart of this and see his sin for what it is instead of trying to protect himself," Tim Bryant director of the Lowcountry Biblical Counseling Center said.
Bryant believes the governor's political future may not be up to him alone.
"If he's sincere before God and has repentance and that's all he's focused on and his wife God will rebuild the trust of the state behind him if God desires that," he said.
