Charleston, SC - Leonard Bernard Gregory did not walk out of the hospital alone. Highway patrol officiers were there waiting for him so they could take him straight to jail.
Over the weekend, officiers pulled Gregory’s car over for speeding. Gregory sped off, running a stop sign and crashing into another car, officers said. The victims in the other car, Johnny and Betty Vice, died in the accident.
Now Johnny and Betty Vice, of North Charleston, leave six children and 21 grandchildren behind.
“Why couldn’t you just stop. Those five or ten seconds my mom laid out there, you could have stopped and shown some humanity and she might have lived, but know you took my mom, my father,” Ron Shaw said.
Shaw is one of the Vice's children and is thankful a tip from the community led to Gregory's arrest.
“I’m glad we got some closure before my moms funeral and before we put Johnny and mom to rest,” he said.
But it’s not over for the family. Shaw has a message for the two other people who police say were also in the car with Gregory and still on the loose.
“Just step up. My moms not going to die in vain,” he said. “If we’ve got to take this 15 to 20 years, that’s what it will be.”
Gregory is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center and is being charged with two counts of leaving a scene involving a death, two counts of wreckless homicide, driving under suspension, and Charleston police have their own charges which are now pending.
Police believe there are still two other suspects in this case who were both seen leaving the accident in either a ford expedition or cadillac escalade.
