Mount Pleasant, SC - Fireworks can be fun and also very dangerous. Officials expect thousands of people nationwide to be injured by them this weekend alone.
Hundreds of people have already starting visiting fireworks stands around the Lowcountry and officials want to warn them about fireworks’ potential dangers.
They go by different names, but the result is the same.
“Stuff that blows up,” Ralph Racioppa of Palmetto Fireworks said. “People love fireworks.”
Fireworks are a fourth of July tradition and can be amazing to look at, but can also be very harmful.
“The biggest danger is carelessness,” William Daniels of Firecracker Bills said. “Do them on the grass, sand or gravel. You want a firm flat surface.”
Daniels also added to keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher near by in case a fire starts. He warns not to let children set off fireworks by themselves and do not launch them near trees or houses.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that 60 percent of all fireworks related injuries happen this weekend.
