High rolling waves are hitting Folly Beach and its vendors.
City council wants more control over rentals and vending on the beach. As council works on that plan, last night they brought up an ordinance that would effect the jet ski businesses first. It would move all the jet ski businesses to the other side of the pier, which could mean bad news for one long time Folly Beach business owner.
After 14 years, Andy Pracht says a new ordinance could pull the plug on his jet ski business.
"So this is a fight for my life, absolutely not much sleep last night that's for sure," said Pracht, who owns Sun and Ski Rentals.
That's because the ordinance would relocate Pracht's business and put all jet ski vendors in one launching lane.
"It would probably put me out of business because it would be really tough to operate from this Holiday Inn right here on the other side of the pier," said Pracht.
But Folly Beach Mayor Carl Beckman says its a safety issue.
"It puts the jet ski operation out of the swim zone right now, Andy's is smack in the middle of it," said Beckman.
After 14 years of no accidents, Pracht says this new way is asking for trouble.
"It makes it more dangerous, way more dangerous, right now the way we're operating we have that pier separating those two businesses," said Pracht.
The other jet ski business owners agree with the changes.
"To some citizens we had a bad reputation in terms of safety, but there were no regulations in place so we're at the forefront at wanting it to be regulated," said Riptide Jet Ski Rentals owner, Bob Thomas.
Andy Pracht says he extends an open invitation to council members to come out and watch his operation before making any decisions.
That ordinance passed first reading last night.
