A trio of suspects is behind bars Thursday night after being linked to three bank robberies in Dorchester and Berkeley County.
In orange jump suits and handcuffs, three suspects all from Indiana, Lawanda Johnson, 24, Auric Koestner, 30, and Brandon Williams, 21, faced a judge in bond court.
They were charged with bank robbery, assault and battery and conspiracy to commit a violent crime. Police say their run came to an end after hitting up a bank in Moncks Corner on Wednesday. It was a series of surveillance photos that tipped off bank employees.
"The witnesses, the victims, the tellers, when they first walked into the bank they started to tell each other, hey look those are the people from TV," said Lt. Wendell Bowen with Moncks Corner police.
Police say Koestner pulled out a gun and demanded money, Johnson was by his side and Williams was driving the getaway car. A vehicle description sent out quickly helped Berkeley County authorities spot the car outside Moncks Corner. In the car, Police found the gun and $25,000. Each of the suspects had prior records including drug, weapon, and forgery charges.
"It's the repeat offenders, not new criminals coming at us over and over again, job security for us but bad news for the community," said Lt. Bowen.
During bond court, Lt. Bowen called for the judge to set a bond that would send a message to the community. In response, the suspects bond was set at 500,000 dollars each. The judge said he made the decision in hopes they would not be able to make bail.
The Harleyville bank is one of the three the suspects are linked to and police say this crime spree may extend beyond the Lowcountry boarders. Police are checking with law enforcement agencies from here to Indiana to see if the suspects are responsible for anymore robberies. They will be transported to Dorchester County where they will face additional charges.
