One man is behind bars Wednesday night after being accused of biting another man’s nose off.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old Gary Nell Eastwood Tuesday night around 9:45 and charged him with assault and battery.
The victim, 32-year-old Thomas James Easterling, told deputies he was waiting in line at a Burger King on Folly Road, when he noticed a truck behind him “smoking his tires and acting aggressively.” According to the incident report, the truck, driven by Eastwood, rammed the victim’s car. Easterling got out of his car and approached Eastwood. Witnesses say that’s when a fight broke out.
"The assaulter then bit the victims nose off and spit it out and continued to roar," Witness Brett Sims said. "The gentleman continued to yell and scream at the victim and continued going after him."
In a statement to the sheriff's office, Eastwood said he intentionally bit the victims nose off because he was in "war." Deputies noted while en route to the jail, Eastwood "described the taste of the blood graphically almost bragging."
Sims said Eastwood appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or a narcotic, adding Eastwood continued to act aggressive and yell at people going through the drive through before he was apprehended by sheriff's deputies.
Easterling was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina and is expected to be okay. The portion of his nose that was bit off was found, and doctors did perform surgery to re-attach his nose. He is expected to have at least one more surgery.
Eastwood's bond was set at $100,000.
