Two Daniel Island families have been forced to move because of high levels of mold in their homes. They have lost their homes and much of what was inside.
It looks like moving day but this move is not normal. The Allens are not only packing up their belongings, but they have to disinfect them.
“When we’re done, we’ll rinse it and we have to spray just to make sure none of the spores are left,” Joy Allen explained.
The mold problem in their home is so bad they cannot live there anymore. The mold has also penetrated anything porous so clothes must be washed and furniture that cannot be washed must be left behind. Throwing these things away is a precaution because mold spores can regenerate in a new environment. The Allens have a new environment of their home.
They moved into a rental home near where they used to live. Their frustration is growing everyday.
“D.R. Horton has been aware for several years that these homes have these deficiencies yet they continue to allow residents to occupy these homes and to live in mold contaminated environments,” Benjamin Allen said.
It will cost thousands of dollars to remediate the home and fix the mold problems.
“The structural damage is so significant and the mold damage is so significant that we’re looking at estimates in the $300,000 range which exceeds the actual value of the property,” Allen added.
Allen wants D.R. Horton to buy the home back.
We tried many times to contact D.R. Horton for a statement, but they did not return our e-mails or phone calls.
