Charles Dobson Jr., the James Island teenager accused of stabbing three people and killing one, made his first court appearance this evening. The judge asked Dobson if he had a statement and before his attorney told him to be quiet, the suspect had this to say.
"If people broke into your house and were harming your family what would you do?" said Dobson Jr.
Charles Dobson Jr. is accused of stabbing one person to death and injuring two others with a large knife. The altercation occurred outside Dobson's home on James Island. His attorney says Dobson Jr. was defending his family from harm.
"We have been able to ascertain this is a clear case of self defense, that's what it appears to be at this time," said Attorney Margie Pizarro.
According to police, the suspect was home with his 18-year-old brother and another guest. Beyond that information from police remains very vague.
"We're really not sure exactly what happened, why it happened, who was involved or what role various people had in this altercation,” said Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon.
Robert Craig Massey Jr. was stabbed twice in the chest and later died at MUSC. Mary Hills and Travis Barrow also injured in the incident, each are stable. But according to the suspect, his actions were justified.
"These people broke into my house and assaulted me," said Dobson Jr.
Dobson's attorney says the brother and another guest in the house at the time were injured but would not say how serious. The suspect’s father, Charles Dobson Sr. stood in bond court this evening but referred all comments to the attorney. In all, Dobson Jr. faces one count murder and two counts assault and battery with intent to kill, his bond was denied.
