A man charged with sexually assaulting women inside their homes is behind bars. Michael Anthony Washington was arrested before for burglary and criminal sexual conduct back in November. He was given bond in that case and was out of jail awaiting trial when the string of sexual assaults occurred in Charleston and North Charleston. Wednesday Washington faced a judge for these crimes and was denied bond.
Michael Anthony Washington will not be leaving jail for now. A victim advocate in court today said the victims are fearful of Washington. They say he stole their I.D. and threatened to kill them and their families.
"The fact they took their I.D., that’s another form of control right there. ‘I know where you live, I know your home, I know that kind of stuff’,'" People Against Rape Executive Director, Melonea Locklair said.
Two women were sexually assaulted after they say Washington broke into their homes. One last year in North Charleston on Mosstree Road and one on Radcliff Street in Downtown Charleston in mid-June of this year. A third attack, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature on Smith Street in late May. Washington was connected by Police to all three. Locklair with people against rape says the women helped with their descriptions.
"How impressed I am with the victims with the descriptions of the offender. I think that played a big part in helping apprehend him so I consider them to be heroes also," said Locklair.
The question of course is ‘why was Washington out in the first place?’ He was released on bond back in November. We're told that was the first time he had been charged with criminal sexual conduct and that the $100,000 bond he was given is typical for that crime.
Both City of Charleston and North Charleston police worked together in this investigation. Washington’s attorney says a DNA test will be taken.
