Mount Pleasant, SC - A naval museum in South Carolina is getting more than $9 million to repair a World War II destroyer that needs repairs.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Budget and Control Board voted Monday to loan the money to the Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum.
The destroyer Laffey will go to dry dock on Aug. 19 for repairs. It was known as "The Ship that Would Not Die" for surviving kamikaze attacks during the war.
The Mount Pleasant museum must repay the money within 18 months. The museum hopes to get $20 million in federal funding next year, part of which would be used to repay the loan.
Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom and Gov. Mark Sanford wanted the museum to consider other options.
The centerpiece of the museum is the aircraft carrier Yorktown.
