Charleston, SC -
On Friday, June 19, a stray dog with a missing paw was found on the side of the road on Johns Island. The dog, now named Betsy, is a two year old Staffordshire Terrier. Betsy’s right front paw was completely missing and there was only exposed bone left in its place. The dog was brought to Pet Helpers by a Good Samaritan.
Kristin Kifer, Pet Helpers Operations Manager, immediately took Betsy down to Ohlandt Veterinary Clinic where doctors had to amputate what was left of the leg.
“We speculate that something was wrapped around her paw, causing it to loose blood circulation which caused the paw to fall off,” stated Kifer.
Everything is curable but very costly. Along with having a missing paw, Betsy also has a severe class of hook and round worms. Pet Helpers has already spent over $1,000 for her surgery and shot. Betsy is currently staying at Pet Helpers. She is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery, minus one leg.
“I cannot imagine how long this young dog suffered in the streets with her foot gone, until a kind citizen finally stopped and picked her up. She was literally at deaths door when she got to PH, due to infection, loss of blood and parasites. “Betsy's spirit and apparent love of humans despite her neglect & suffering, and now loss of her leg, is amazing and we thank Dr. Johnny Ohlandt for his excellent surgery and medical staff," stated Carol Linville, President/Founder of Pet Helpers.
Pet Helpers is offering a
$500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who neglected and mistreated Betsy.
Pet Helpers is a private, non-profit 501c 3 animal adoption center and spay/neuter clinic that serves communities across the Lowcountry. They keep all animals until they are adopted. For more information about the event contact Suzanne Carr at scarr@pethelpers.org.
